Acoustic Design
Secchia Piazza project
Grand Rapids Community College, United States
A year in the making, Peter Harper, Global’s Architectural Acoustics Manager, and Richard Lenz of RealAcoustix LLC, diligently collaborated on the innovative Secchia Piazza project at Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This project stands out due to its unique addition to the skyline of Grand Rapids: a kaleidoscopic “skycone” that creates a striking visual landmark for the city. The skycone not only enhances the architectural aesthetics but also symbolizes the forward-thinking spirit of the community college.
Inside the skycone, a skirt of DeAmp AS Translucent Sound Absorber Panels has been installed. These panels play a critical role in the acoustics of the space, ensuring that sound quality is optimized while maintaining a visually appealing design. The panels have been carefully selected to match the architect Ned Baxter of Progressive Companies’ color scheme, which features a vibrant array of glazing in the dome above. This thoughtful integration of color and function underscores the project’s commitment to both beauty and practicality.
The Secchia Piazza project is a testament to the collaborative effort and expertise of all involved, reflecting a harmonious blend of innovative design and advanced acoustic technology. As the project nears completion, it is poised to become a prominent feature of Grand Rapids, embodying the community’s dedication to progress and excellence in education.
