Ceiling Panels

Lassonde Project

Lassonde School of Engineering,  York University, Toronto ON

In September 2021, the Lassonde School of Engineering completed a significant $4.8 million expansion, addressing the growing demand for additional student study areas, capstone design spaces, teaching labs, and faculty offices. The expansion was designed to create a blend of academic spaces within the core of the Engineering precinct, as well as more industrial, large-scale research laboratories located off-campus. This ambitious project was undertaken by GOW HASTINGS ARCHITECTS, who were deeply committed to ensuring that the architecture not only served its functional purpose but also conveyed the emotions and creative vision of the designers.

Central to this vision was the use of color and material to evoke specific emotions within the space. The architects were particularly interested in utilizing semi-translucent materials that would allow light to play a significant role in shaping the atmosphere of the interiors. They approached us with the idea of incorporating semi-translucent panels to achieve this effect. To bring their imaginative concept to life, we provided our Frosts panels, known for their ability to diffuse light and create a soft, ethereal ambiance.

These Frosts panels were meticulously integrated into the design, enhancing the emotional impact of the spaces and aligning perfectly with the architects’ intent. The result was a series of dynamic environments that inspire creativity and collaboration among students and faculty, while also providing practical, flexible spaces for research and learning. Van Horne Construction played a crucial role in executing the project, ensuring that the architectural vision was realized to its fullest potential. The completed facilities now stand as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and the seamless integration of innovative materials.
